What Is ADAS Calibration?
Newer vehicles use cameras and sensors, many mounted at the windshield, to power safety features like lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Together these are called ADAS: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Calibration is the manufacturer-defined procedure that confirms those cameras and sensors are reading the road from the exact reference point they were designed to use.
In plain English: think of it like adjusting the sights on your vehicle’s eyes. If anything moves them, even slightly, they need to be re-aimed so that what your vehicle thinks it sees matches what’s actually on the road.
Why a Tiny Shift Matters
According to AAA, a sensor that’s off by even a fraction of an inch or a single degree ends up aimed at an area significantly off target 50 or more feet down the road. Safety researchers have found that even small misalignments can affect how systems like automatic emergency braking respond.
Picture a laser pointer. Move your hand a hair and the dot barely moves on a wall next to you, but across a parking lot, that same tiny movement puts the dot feet away from where you aimed. A camera behind your windshield works the same way: a small change in angle up close becomes a much bigger difference far down the road.
This doesn’t mean anyone did anything wrong with your vehicle. Normal tolerances in glass, brackets, and mounting, along with vehicle-specific changes, can shift the camera’s reference point. That’s exactly why manufacturers may require calibration after certain repairs or adjustments.

Dynamic Calibration
Performed on the road. The vehicle is driven at manufacturer-specified speeds and conditions while the system learns from real lane lines and traffic. Think of it as learning by doing, with a technician running the procedure.
